LVOV (OSWIECIM) Mezuzah
"Every mezuzah is a story of a given house, family and person. Touching the mezuzah activates a link between past and present." ~ Mi Polin founders, Helene Czernek and Aleksander Prugar
More than 3.5 million Jews lived in Poland before World War II, and the majority of Jewish homes had a mezuzah on their doorpost. While the mezuzot disappeared from these homes in the aftermath of the war, the traces of the mezuzot remained.
Mezuzahs from this series are bronze casts of the traces of mezuzot that once hung on the doorposts of Jewish homes before the Holocaust. Mi Polin, the first Judaica workshop in Poland since World War II, casts the imprints taken from traces of the mezuzot in bronze to give new life to those long gone and fulfill their original holy function.
